Junlin Luo joined 91²Ö¿â as a doctoral researcher in 2025.

She was awarded an MA in Applied Linguistics (Distinction) from University College London, an MA in Scandinavian Studies from Uppsala University, and a BA in Swedish from Beijing Foreign Studies University. Her research focuses on cultural consumption, identity and discourse.

Constructing and reconstructing Middle-Class identity in Contemporary China: A discourse analysis of changing consumption of an idealised West in the Chinese lifestyle magazine Yilin

Supervisors: Dr Thomas Thurnell-Read and Dr Adrian Leguina

The research focuses on the Chinese lifestyle magazine Yilin, examining the changing fashion of consumption of the magazine among different generations of Chinese middle class, revealing changes over the past two decades in the identity and cultural values of the Chinese middle class.
